1992 SeasonAfter the travails of 1991 the Collective stepped up a gear in 1992, winning 8 matches of the 18 played, against only 6 defeats. The slightly curtailed fixture list and the generally low scoring suggest that the weather was far from ideal. The season started well with a comfortable win at Cokenach. On a pitch described in the book as "soggy", the hosts failed to cope with PoC's opening spell of 8-6-2-4 and slumped to 46 all out. Weathering a mini-collapse from 41-2 to 41-4, opener Phil Solomon's undefeated 16 led RedBat to a 6-wicket victory. The following week's defeat to the now mildly-famous Harry Baldwins was nothing more than a blip, and the Collective went undefeated until late July, when we were caught on a mudbath of a wicket in Birmingham, and turned over by 8 wickets by the MOB XI. Once acquired the losing habit proved hard to shift, and the second half of the season saw a number of heavy defeats, with a few narrow wins providing occasional consolation. The tour this year took us to Cambridge. Off-field entertainment came courtesy of the hotelier, who proved to be a surprisingly strident admirer (and possibly a distant relative) of Benito Mussolini. If you haven't already read PoC's account of the opening game on the historic Parker's Piece this would be a good time to do so. The other tour matches were altogether less victorious, though still highly enjoyable, especially for BAL, who made 72 of a total of 130 against Stretham, and was uncontainable during a last-wicket partnership of 57 with Keith (not out 2). The now-traditional visit to Downe for the final fixture of the season again gave us a leisurely win in a low-scoring match against the RCS. Bowlers are likely to enjoy 1992 averages, but the generally soft wickets made this a tough season for the batting fraternity. The season by numbers
