1988 SeasonAfter the heady successes of 1987, 1988 was a generally bruising reality check for most of the Collective. The bare facts go like this: P22 W6 D4 L12, though four of the six wins were collected before the end of May, and the rest of the season featured some heavy defeats. The season opened with a rare win on the plastic at Tufnell Park, with Pacific falling foul of Phil Solomon's bowling and a solid 2nd-wicket partnership between Matt and Tony Rose. Next up were Wandsworth Gods; this routine win on the Common is notable mainly for the debut of the Beard, as well as this correspondent (and on my birthday too), in addition to a fine all-round performance from Giles. There followed a series of low-scoring matches through to mid-June, when the runs seemed to dry up completely. We reached 3 figures in only three innings from 4 June onwards (including the experimental two-innings match against Nuxley), leading inevitably to a series of losses in the second half of the season. The Malvern tour was a chastening experience for most of the participants, though Lloyd and Mike Redfern have more reason than most to remember it fondly: Lloyd stumped three and caught two others in the match against Old Carolians to set a probably-unassailable wicketkeeping record, while Mike took a career-best 4-22 in the same match, including all three of Lloyd's stumpings. The 1988 averages make unsurprisingly grim reading for the batsmen, but the bowlers come off rather better; this was PoC's peak year with an astonishing 42 wickets at 12.2, with strong support from Solomon, Pott and Lee among others.
